Star Wars - An ASCII Hope

This is just something funny and interesting that I happened across on my never-ending search for the end of the internet. If you are a Star Wars fan, such as myself, then this should amuse you if nothing else. For those of you familiar with telnet, open this address towel.blinkenlights.nl and enjoy the show. The IPv6 version has extra scenes and extra color support. So if you want to experience ascii Star Wars to it's fullest you really should get IPv6. www.sixxs.net or another IPv6 tunnel broker may help getting IPv6 to your computer.

For those of you who don't know what i'm talking about, keep reading...

Apple Computer, Inc. Unveils iPhone

300h.jpg

Only Apple, Inc. folks. The computer is gone, long live...the device! The iPhone was unveiled this week leaving jaws dropped all over the place. Are we being told that this sleek, stylish, sexy yet comfortable, convenient, touch-screen, video playing, picture showing iPod phone is also affordable? Is that just one big run-on sentence? Is there a dash in run-on? Hmmm...

I tend to drift. Since this device has so much to offer, it is easier on me to just touch on the main highlights to get you all excited. So here we go..

- It is in fact, an iPod and a phone.
- 3.5" Widescreen View that autosenses when turned.
- Incorporated Coverflow (the pretty way it displays album art)
- Touchscreen for easy naviagtion or music, contacts, etc..
- 2-megapixel camera and a photo management application
- Built-in Google and Yahoo! search

Virtual World Realtor = Real World Millionaire

secondlife.bmp
Recently a friend of mine opened an account on Second Life so that he could set up a virtual office for his real world company. He has remote offices and workers and wanted to create an environment where they could all come together in more of an interactive manner. After hearing how he bought land, set up an office building, and furnished it, I decided to find out more about Second Life myself. In doing so I came across an article about a woman in Germany who has built a virtual property empire worth a real million dollars.

cnet News has published an article about this virtual world realtor that I found very interesting. In the article Anshe Chung discusses how she got started and built her business, as well as offering advice for other budding entrepeneurs interested in becoming virtual world tycoons.

Giveaway of the Day

While checking in on one of my favorite blogs, Lifehacker, I came across a post concerning a free download of Direct Audio Converter and CD Ripper from Piston Software. The app typically sells for $24.95 but is available today for $0.00. Not a bad deal. To get the free download you go to Giveaway of the Day and download it, its that simple.

Giveaway of the Day is a site developed to help both users and publishers together to the benefit of all. Users get a free app, not a limited or trial version, and publishers get their product reviewed and posted on Giveaway's site for a predetermined amount of time. The publisher stands to get a lot of publicity about their product and themselves as the popularity of the site grows.

RobinHood Funds - Web Charity

christmas-landing.gif

What if all you had to do was ask? Just go to www.robinhoodfund.com and check it out. Whether it is a heartfelt act to help out a family on Christmas or to take a trip to Vegas with your friends, Robin Hood might just make that a reality. This is unlike other charities in which it does not relay back to an elite board of directors. You decide whose wishes to grant!

Here's how it works. Tell them a story about what money is needed either for you or someone you feel is deserving. For the price of a latte, the Robinhood Fund community might make your wish come true. There are five catagories to choose for your story. The type of request will help you decide which catagory to put your wish under. Your wish will be voted on against other wishes in the same catagory. Every week the Robinhood Fund community votes for the wishes they feel should be granted.

Toshiba Fuels New 80GB iPod

black-ipod-18.jpg

Those crazy kids and their perpendicular recording systems. The iPod drive uses Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) technology to squeeze 80GB onto a mechanism that actually features a 10 percent smaller footprint than first generation 1.8 PMR drives. What that means is more tunes and now movies! iTunes 7, in collaboration with Disney (for now), are now boasting about the ability to download entire movies to your iPod. Of course, you could always do that, but now they are offering the ability to purchase them through iTunes.

The movie list right now is pretty limited and the download times are a little slow. Each movie is roughly 1.4GB. On a cable connection, I was able to grab 'The Incredibles' in about an hour.

"Weird Al" Yankovic - Straight Outta Lynwood & Other Existential Quandaries

solcvrms1.jpg

Being an Al fan for most of my adolescent life to the present, I have learned a few things. One thing i picked up along the way is don't take life too seriously. Oh, and how to make a twinkie weiner sandwich. Yum! In the past weeks, Al has been out doing a lot of legwork on promoting his new album, "Straight Outta Lynwood". Radio shows, TV spots, and even Myspace. This is his 12th studio album. He came at us with a free download in early June. It was a parody of James Blunt's 'You're Beautiful', aptly named 'You're Pitiful'. Thanks Al! However, the reason it was put up was because Atlantic records denied him permission to add that track to the album. So, up for free download it goes.

Next up, Al announces that the album will go on sale on September 26, 2006. Only a few days away according to my calendar. In mid August, Al released another song on his Myspace entitled (ironically enough), 'Don't Download This Song'. It is a style parody of 'We Are the World'. You rock, AL!

Microsoft's Media Device: The Argo? Zune? Xpod?

zune.jpg New information about Microsoft's upcoming wireless media player is flying all around the web today. We have decided to jump on the bandwagon and give you our take on this new addition to the media player market. While there is no confirmed name for the device the consensus seems to be that it will be called Zune, personally I prefer Xpod!

Word is the device (Xpod?!) will have built in wi-fi and a larger screen than Apple's video Ipod. We have also heard that Microsoft plans to let owners replace their iTunes song catalog for free from its own music service. As usual Microsoft will be playing hardball in an attempt to get a foothold in a new market. Will it work? Who knows.

Blu-ray Disc/DVD Internal Writer - BDR-101A

br.jpg

Ahhh...101A. Just sounds new, doesn't it? And it only has a slightly ridiculous price tag of $979. But with that tag, you get a hefty list of features. But before I hit the pros, there are of course a couple of cons. While researching this 'bare drive', I found out that this drive comes with no software. So how will Nero know what to do with a Blu-Ray Drive? Well, that took me on a trip over to the Nero website. Upon arriving, I get smacked in the face with a pleasing update to Nero 7 which includes Blu-Ray support. I'm happy again.
